The "Tonno Rosso" is the result of resourcefulness
the courage and the extraordinary passion that the Gallo family has always cultivated for the sea and for fishing. As Antonio Gallo, founder of the family, tells us, his fisherman activity began in 1955, when at the age of 15 he left from scratch in his hometown, Torre Annunziata, where now is known as “u ‘turrese “. About ten years later, he moved to Salerno where he started his shipowner activity: fishing for bluefin tuna is an innate passion for him. In 1968, in partnership with the well-known lawyer from Salerno, Natale Consalvo, he built the Santa Rita, the first tonnara in Italy entirely made of iron.
In 1970 he purchased the Madonna delle Lacrime and seven years later the Gaetano, a 50 meter long ship, in partnership with the Salerno owners Severino Costabile and Carmine Novella. In 1991, it was the turn of the Enza Madre, commissioned to the carpenter Michele D’Amico, at the DA.RO.MAR.CI. shipyard in Trapani. In 2004, Mariagrazia was built in the historic Ippolito shipyard in Castellabate. And finally the Arcella which, together with the steering wheels Denise I, Tornado II and Luigi Cesare, is among the latest born in the Gallo fleet.
So, thanks to his experience, stubbornness and deep knowledge of the sea, Captain Antonio Gallo and his sons Luigi, Giuseppe and Ferdinando over the years have created an important fleet of fishing boats, specialized above all in the bluefin tuna fishing.
Since 2004, with the establishment of the “Tonno Rosso di Ferdinando Gallo e F.lli snc”, the Company has been headed by Ferdinando Gallo who, in concert with his brothers, after becoming leader in the fishing of bluefin tuna in the Mediterranean, decides to focus also on the distribution of their catch. Thus, in 2020, the Gallo brothers once again have invested in a fleet, but in this case on the ground: technologically advanced self-cooled trucks, with which they quickly distribute their catch mainly to wholesalers on national and European territory.
